Collection: Vibrators

The history of the vibrator dates back to the late 19th century when it was developed, not as a sex toy, but as a medical instrument for treating a condition then known as "hysteria." This catch-all term was used to describe a variety of women's symptoms ranging from anxiety to irritability. Doctors of the era performed "pelvic massage" as a treatment, which was both time-consuming and labor-intensive. The invention of the vibrator was meant to make this process more efficient. The first electromechanical vibrator was patented by British physician Joseph Mortimer Granville in the 1880s. Vibrators were marketed as home appliances for health and relaxation purposes and were sold in department stores. Over the course of the 20th century, the vibrator's role evolved from a medical device to a tool for sexual pleasure, becoming an integral part of the sexual revolution and eventually recognized as an important device for women's sexual empowerment and pleasure. Today, vibrators are widely available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and functionalities and are considered a staple in the sexual wellness industry.
